Reviews

PreS?Through observations and questions about two guinea pigs, Facts introduces different ways of tabulating statistics. In the second title, Griffiths shows numbers and numerals in various forms and places and outlines their uses for identification and counting. Both books include explanatory notes that give information for using the text, related "Things to Do," glossaries, and a few museums that focus on mathematical experiences. The clear, attractive, full-color photos have a good balance of gender and race. However, they do little to demonstrate math principles?they just provide colorful conversation pieces. The texts that describe the activities are for adults, and appear at the back of the books, which requires constant flipping back and forth. Early math books may be in demand, but these do not have enough purpose to justify their cost and shelf space.?Nancy A. Gifford, Schenectady County Public Library, NY
