Densey Clyne is a writer, photographer and TV presenter with a special interest in insects and other mini-beasts. She is well known for her imaginative approach to the study of natural history. Her other books in this series are Cicada Sing-Song, Catch Me If You Can, Plants of Prey, Flutter by, Butterfly and Spotlight on Spiders.
Grade 4-6?Breezy texts and eye-catching photographs make these introductions to Australian frogs and spiders appealing. Each title briefly describes physical and behavioral characteristics shared by all frogs or spiders, respectively, and special characteristics of over a dozen species. One or more beautifully composed, sharp, full-color photographs (most of which are closeups) appear on every page. Although both titles are lucid, well organized, and written in an engaging style, there are some problems. First of all, it is not immediately apparent that the texts refer only to Australian creatures and locations. There is no glossary for words that may be unfamiliar to American readers (scientific terms are defined within the texts). Clyne includes some charming personal anecdotes but makes a few subjective (and anthropomorphic) comments. Also, the average sizes of the animals are not given, and while most of those depicted are identified in captions, some are not. D. M. Souza's Frogs, Frogs Everywhere (Carolrhoda, 1994) and Jennifer Dewey's Spiders Near and Far (Dutton, 1993) are excellent general introductions to these animals. However, since most books on Australian wildlife focus on koalas and kangaroos; these titles give readers a closeup look at some non-cuddly types. Browsers will be drawn by the excellent photography.?Karey Wehner, San Francisco Public Library
