Gr 2-4-Life and culture in a large, complex country is difficult to summarize briefly for young readers, and despite inviting color photographs on every page, Brazil does not quite succeed. This broad overview of the South American nation's geography, wildlife, history, and people is presented in a simplistic manner. The history begins with the arrival of the Europeans in the 16th century and dashes to the present. The problematic relationships among the country's many races are touched upon in an attempt to explain the differences in wealth, education, and health. Many of Brazil's talented and globally important artists, musicians, and architects are omitted in the necessarily brief format. The illustrations include a world map placing the nation in its global context and one with its constituent states. Vibrantly colored photographs with often haunting views of children's faces will compel viewers to linger. However, many are marred by such inane captions as, "Many Brazilian children love to read." One caption describes the Amazon River near Manaus as running through the rain forest, but the banks of the river look treeless. Not an essential purchase.-Frances E.
