Uschan is careful to present the perspectives of both the Indians and the whites. Ellis Island, focusing on the period of the largest influx of European immigration to the U.S., is an insightful history from the perspectives of both the new arrivals and the people who worked at the immigration entry point, including cooks, doctors, nurses, interpreters, and immigration officials. The series design is attractive, with drawings, maps, paintings, and photos; primary sources, such as excerpts from diaries, letters, and newspapers, support and enhance the texts.
