PreS-Gr. 1. These two entries in the I Can Do Math series introduce early learners to basic mathematical concepts. Measuring asks children to identify tools that measure time (calendars and clocks), weight (scales), length (rulers), and temperature (thermometers). Making Graphs describes various ways to present visual comparisons of objects, sorting by color, shape, taste, number of letters, initial letter, habitat, or number of appendages. Both books employ an engaging question-and-answer format. The texts are succinct, leaving teachers an opportunity to expand on particular points as needed. Clear, full-color photos appear on nearly every page, portraying objects to be categorized or identified; children are included in the artwork for Graphs. Colorful typefaces and borders and effective use of white space make for an appealing and uncluttered format. Quizzes are appended for each title. With the current emphasis on real-world applications and the use of manipulative objects, these will dovetail perfectly with most primary-level math studies, and they will be popular adjuncts to the mathematics curriculum.
