Reviews

Kindergarten-Grade 2–These titles introduce simple math concepts in a manner that is easy to read in either language. The full-color photographs show a diverse group of people in real-life settings. At the doctors office, a child is weighed and measured and his heartbeats are counted. At the grocery store, cartons of milk are counted, fruit is weighed, packages of meat are compared, and change is made at the cashier. In the kitchen, a mother and child prepare to bake chocolate-chip cookies. Ingredients are counted and measured, quantities are compared, fractions (in the form of half cups) are introduced, and finally the finished cookies are counted. On a Trip depicts a family traveling by car to visit Grandma. Along the way, they count the road signs, keep track of miles driven, and compare the length of a train to that of a car. These books can be read on two levels. The simple, declarative sentences in large print encourage fledgling readers to decipher words and to make observations. The smaller, boxed type poses mathematical questions that are slightly more challenging. Each volume has a glossary in both English and Spanish and an answer key. Useful titles to supplement the math curriculum.
