The idea behind Andrew Marvell's "Upon Appleton House: An Analytic Commentary", is the recognition of Marvell's poem as, line-for-line, perhaps the most aesthetically eventful, unobtrusively playful and undemandingly complex long poem of the English Renaissance - as, quite possibly, the most spectacular and sustained example of wit in the English language. The author believes that the artistic density of the poem calls for a line-by-line annotation that addresses, on the one hand, the poem's protean internal coherences and, on the other, the probable reading experience of the poem - both that of its original audience and of us today. Thus, this commentary not only glosses the text, but tries to capture the poem as it occurs in the minds of its readers.
