This book is about how children are taught to read in the classroom and in the school library media center. Only if school library media specialists have a sound understanding of the reading instruction process will they be able to guide readers on how to use the wealth of printed materials available to them in the school library media center. How a partnership between teacher and school library media specialist can be brought about is described for each grade level under "role of the school library media specialist." How the role of the library media specialist can be implemented is discussed in the "idea" sections. The teaching/learning suggestions provided in the "ideas," with few exceptions, are print oriented, for it is necessary to stress unequivocally that children will only learn to read when they come face to face with the printed word. Great care was taken to suggest reading ideas that can be used with children of various abilities. The ultimate goal of this book is to convince school library media specialists that they are the professionals who can provide that special ingredient in the reading program which makes it possible for all children to read at their highest level of ability.
