The concept of outsourcing raised major concerns, both pro and con, during the early 1990s, and the Commercial Technical Services Committee of the Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS) concluded that case studies would help provide libraries considering outsourcing certain operations the information needed to make their decisions. The 16 cases presented here represent the experiences of 11 academic, 3 public, and 2 special libraries. They cover such incidents as having the entire cataloging and processing operations provided by a vendor outside the library or outsourcing only authority operations or even in-sourcing (hiring temporary staff or using current staff working overtime) to catalog a special collection. An extensive annotated bibliography is included, augmenting the value of this resource for any library considering outsourcing technical services operations. Edward Swanson
