Yvette Johnson is a writer, film producer, and speaker. She coproduced the documentary "Booker s Place: A Mississippi Story", which premiered at the 2012 Tribeca Film Festival.
This book provides thematic board games for elementary school children that have all been used successfully by the Glenview (IL) Public Library. Each program revolves around a single theme such as "The Haunted Mansion," "The Quest for the Golden Unicorns," or "The Case of the Baker Street Baker." Each time participants read a book, they may take a turn at the board game; prizes are earned by reading certain numbers of books as well as by chance landings on the board. While ready-to-use graphics are included, and notes outline the staff needed to supervise the process, there are no suggested book lists, programs, or activities to accompany the games. Libraries committed to incorporating games into an existing reading program may find this book instructive; however, overall it does not provide enough substance on its own.-Marlyn K.
