Mediavilla used her Loleta D. Fyan Award to study the services libraries provide through homework centers around the U.S. With a surge in population and a growing number of parents who have difficulty helping their children with homework, whether due to language barriers or job constraints, homework centers may become increasingly important. The author gives succinct but thorough explanations of the steps involved in starting them, with chapters on everything from community surveys, staff recruitment, and funding proposals to liability issues. Each chapter includes examples from libraries around the country and concludes with a summary paragraph that can be used as a quick overview. The appended material, which includes sample documents, is numerous and substantial.
