9780838908525: Books in Bloom: Creative Patterns and Props That Bring Stories to Life

Authors and illustrators spend years developing their creative visions. It is only fitting that their artistic integrity is preserved using beautiful, functional, and creative props for performing the book or poem at story time. What if you could make great props in a reasonable amount of time, learn tips to safely store them, and adapt them for a variety of uses and audiences over the years? Now you can throughly engage your audience in the quality and spirit of your presentation when you use these "permission granted" plans, scripts, and props that reflect the original works. Books in Bloom outlines the step-by-step process and proves anyone can do it. Covering every question and concern, and supported with all the resources to do both the creative and the administrative tasks (such as copyright releases and script adaptations), this is a must-have resource. Following the step-by-step instructions, you'll learn how to make these props that range in difficulty - from "easy," taking two or three hours, to "expert" level, taking up to 20 hours. By understanding the developmental underpinnings and mastering all the steps throughout the process, you will be ready to tackle your own projects. You'll learn: Which books or poems are best suited to which presentation format; Key tips for adapting books into scripts, complete with suggested movement and sounds; How to go about getting permission to create a multi-media adaptation; Proven methods to move beyond what is commonly available Thoroughly organized instructions, complete time lines, materials lists, and scripts are provided, making it easy to offer inspired presentations. For all those children's librarians, school media specialists, storytellers, teachers, and day-care workers willing to take the next step to transform story time into a truly magical experience, this guide will spark the imaginations of all those committed to sharing literature with children.

About the Author:

Kimberly Faurot is a children's librarian committed to creating quality materials, visual storytelling pieces, and services for children's library programming. Providing children's services in public libraries around the Midwest for more than a decade, she has also designed several book character dolls for the MerryMakers, Inc. toy company. She holds her MLS from Indiana University.

From Booklist:

This excellent book provides patterns for props and examples of story scripts for teachers and librarians to use in enhancing storytimes. It covers everything from obtaining copyright permissions and supplies to step-by-step directions. Ample illustrations make it clear how to proceed. Of particular interest are the scripts for well-known picture books and poems. These are sensitively done and do not distract from the actual books. Storage and recycling of props are discussed, as are the many different kinds of materials that can be used to make props such as flannel board, puppets, or stick puppets. A pleasure to read, this book should inspire professionals and students to become innovative and interactive with audiences and is highly recommended for preschool and elementary-school teachers and librarians.
