Published since 1969, and last published in 1999, this source has reflected huge changes in reference publishing and services. According to the preface, the book seeks “to serve as an authoritative buying guide for the purchase of reference collections for newly established libraries and for improving and expanding existing collections” in very small (under 10,000 population) to medium-sized (up to 99,999) libraries. The volume is divided into 20 chapters relating to subject classifications and, within those chapters, into reference formats, such as databases, dictionaries, and encyclopedias. Each entry includes the edition reviewed, ISBN, cost, DDC and LCCN, and an annotation. The number of entries has dropped because every entry was critically reconsidered for the seventh edition. Other changes reflect the gravitation toward subject encyclopedias and the preponderance of online reference resources with their dizzying array of interfaces. A recommended purchase for collection development needs in the reference department. --Jerry Carbone
