About the Author

As the publisher of the essential "Guide to Reference Books," first printed more than a century ago, as well as "Reference Sources for Small and Medium-Sized Libraries" and "Fundamental Reference Sources," the American Library Association has long been a source for authoritative bibliographies of the reference literature for practicing librarians, library educators, and reference service trainers. The ALA Guide to Reference series continues that tradition with expertly compiled, discipline-specific, annotated bibliographies of reference works. Under the direction of general editors Robert Kieft (2000-2009) and Denise Bennett (2009- ), many librarians have contributed their time and their knowledge of reference literature to this series.

Reviews

Medical and health-sciences information changes rapidly, and the amount of information available is overwhelming. Intended to help librarians find relevant research and consumer-health information resources, this print guide from the American Library Association is taken from the online Guide to Reference. Most of the sources included have been published between 1995 and 2007. Since the majority of information in this area is now published electronically, the emphasis is on electronic resources. The book is divided into broad sections: medicine, dentistry, public health, etc. There are three new sections: consumer health, health care, and global health. Each entry includes a complete bibliographic citation and an annotation covering scope, publication history, and types of information included. The Medical Library Association’s Master Guide to Authoritative Information Resources in the Health Sciences (Neal-Schuman, 2011) covers similar information at a much higher price ($295). Given the nature of information in the health sciences, any print resource will soon be out-of-date, but this guide is still helpful for new practitioners, instructors, and those doing collection development for medical and health collections. --Barbara Bibel
