After several years' work by ALSC's National Planning for Special Collections Committee, Jones has compiled a new edition of the standard work last edited by Carolyn Field (1982). It has been enlarged to include 300 collections in the U.S., up from 268 in the last edition, and 119 institutions in 40 foreign countries. It includes information about holdings in any format--print, illustration, and audiovisual.

This work is arranged in three sections: a directory of U.S. collections, a subject index to those collections, and a directory of international collections. A final index lists institutions and named collections. U.S. collections are arranged by state, city, and institution. Each entry contains address, phone and fax numbers, contact name, E-mail and Internet address, and the cataloging utility used by the institution. A short description is followed by the subject headings used in the subject index. All pertinent special collections held by an institution are listed alphabetically after the general entry. When necessary, there are separate descriptions for these collections. A list of any publications about the collection is also included.

The subject index includes authors, illustrators, and publishers, as well as genres. Descriptive notes vary according to what the institution reported but generally include either number of cubic feet, number of linear feet, or title quantities. The final section is arranged by country, city, and institution. Information given is similar to that in the U.S. section. There is a short description of the collection, but there are no subject headings assigned, since these collections are not included in the subject index.

Kudos to the committee and to editor Jones for providing libraries with this essential guide to special collections devoted to the study of children's and young adult literature. Academic libraries supporting the study of children's literature will need a copy for their reference collections; large public libraries and researchers will want to consider purchasing this volume, too.
