In 1991, the Library of Congress published Descriptive Cataloging of Rare Books ( DCRB ), a manual for rare book catalogers designed to supplement AACR2. DCRB provided additional instructions for description, access points, transcription of orthography, treatment of rare serials, and levels of cataloging specific to rare books and materials. Now the Bibliographic Standards Committee of the Association of College & Research Libraries' Rare Books and Manuscripts Section has prepared this handbook to complement the DCRB. It contributes 53 cataloging examples based on 50 title pages (or substitutes thereof) from rare books, serials, and single sheets published between c.1480 and 1963. The title pages and illustrative portions of text from elsewhere within the works are reproduced, mostly without reduction, on versos facing corresponding MARC-like records, annotated with references to applicable rules from DCRB. The manual largely satisfies the publisher's stated intention in the promotional material "to assist the novice or infrequent rare book cataloger, as well as provide guidance on difficult and obscure points for more experienced catalogers." Many rules are represented numerous times, some perhaps more often than necessary. Two title pages are reproduced more than once in order to demonstrate variations in applications of the rules, a procedure that would have made Examples all the more useful had it been more frequently used. Rules pertaining to physical description and copy-specific characteristics are naturally difficult to relate solely to a title page facsimile. The quality of the reproductions is fair to good. For libraries owning and using DCRB , Examples is an appropriate addition.
