Examination of academic library operations as they affect users is the central theme of these new collections of essays. Written by current or past practitioners, the ten chapters are divided into two parts. The first section opens with Michael Gorman's essay on the need to consult users during the planning process, using technology to empower users, and providing high-quality and friendly service. Lizabeth A. Wilson then uses the "gateway" concept as a model for service for undergraduate students. The book's second part discusses how collection development, cataloging, reference, interlibrary loan, access services plus personnel and financial decisions affect users. Most of the chapters cover both problems faced by librarians and users plus solutions to those concerns. Although well written, this book presents few new ideas. However, library school students plus practitioners should benefit from it, especially if read in conjunction with Restructuring Academic Libraries (American Library Assn., 1997) and Gateways to Knowledge: (Professional Media, LJ 6/15/97).AStephen L.
