Synopsis

The Academic Library Building in the Digital Age: A Study of Construction, Planning, and Design of New Library Space is the first comprehensive study of planning and construction of academic library buildings completed entirely in the new century. Given digitization of collections, the dynamic mix of new learning spaces with traditional library functions, and other factors informing contemporary library design, the digital age has not raised so much the question of if libraries will survive, but how they will survive. This book answers this question, among others, by looking to academic library building projects completed in recent years.

Reviews

At a time when forecasters have been projecting that everything will be digital, you might not expect many colleges and universities to be constructing new library buildings. To the contrary, 99 new academic libraries were opened from 2003 to 2009. This work presents the results of a survey of staff at those libraries, reviewing the rationale for their construction, budget factors, design of user spaces, and implementation of technology. It examines features provided in the new libraries that often were not available in the old, such as coffee shops, meeting rooms, student services, and auditoriums. It compares the new libraries by institutional characteristics, such as enrollment and degrees offered. The book will be useful for any institution thinking (or dreaming) about constructing a new library building. It will provide some solid comparisons for planning purposes as well as ideas for features to be included. --David Tyckoson
