Seller: Rural Hours (formerly Wood River Books), La Grande, OR, U.S.A.
Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Association copy, inscribed in red ink on the front paste down (which is an illustrated map of North and South America): "Uncle Ross -- Happy 3/4 Century ++++ (almost 4/5!), Love -- Helen Beaumont and Bob." Also signed in full by Helen Ross Russell on the title page. In the inscription, "Happy 3/4 century ++++ . Love --" is in a thicker Sharpie/marker, a different, larger script. Possibly that portion was done by a child (her child?) and Helen Ross Russell filled in the rest. Beaumont is her original middle name (Ross is her maiden name), and Bob is her husband, Robert S Russell, an art professor. Helen Ross Russell was an important mid-century environmentalist, an early female biologist-conservationist and promoter of environmental education. She was a professor of biology and chair of the science department of what's now Fitchburg State College in Massachusetts. Many of her outdoorsy books were for young adults, this one included. A nice family association copy and uncommon signed--an uncommon book in general, looks like, especially not ex-library. Second printing, April 1974. Fine book with a faint hint of soiling to lower edge of boards; still fine. In a near fine jacket with a few short tears to edges and rubbing. // Wood (+) River (=) Books specializes in place-based and environmental literature, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions.
