Most people bargain, negotiate or haggle when they buy a car or shop at a garage sale or flea market. But you can and should bargain more often. When you're dealing with the owner or manager of a small store, a little haggling can go a long way. You'll be surprised at how much money you'll save by following our Skinflint bargaining guidelines:
* Be prepared. Know the competitor's comparable prices.
* Always deal with someone of authority such as the owner or the manager.
* The more your buy, the more leverage you have. For example, if you're remodeling your kitchen, buy all your appliances from the same dealer. He'll be much more willing to give you a discount.
* If you can't get anyone to budge on price, ask them to "throw in" some extras (disks for computers, paper for printers, blank tapes for cassette players, etc.).
* Always ask for a 5% discount for paying cash. The store must pay extra for you to use your credit card and may give you a price break to avoid paying a credit fee.
* Include the tax in your offer and be sure to make this clear by saying "tax included."
* Large chains know about sales in advance. Ask if the item you want is going on sale soon. Ask if they'll give you the sale price early.
What's great about this kind of book is that for the authors, this is not just a subject to write about, it's a way of life. This book is light-hearted, upbeat and fun with a series of short chapters that give how-to thrift tips on home, travel, garage sales, bargaining and more. Let them take you by the hand and show you the skinflint way. -- From The WomanSource Catalog & Review: Tools for Connecting the Community for Women; review by Ilene Rosoff
