This classic western yarn first appeared as a five-part magazine serial in 1941. Now in book form more than a half-century later, it remains an excellent example of the straightforward and effective style that made Foster popular in the pulp-western era. When Texas trailhand Jim Barre loans another cowboy, Dale Clark, his last $200, Clark gives Jim an old Mexican saddle as security. Then Clark is murdered, and his sister, Marilee, spotting the saddle, wants Jim and his pal, Waco Ibolt, arrested. The saddle, it turns out, is the key to a lost mine. Baddies want the mine and Clark's sister's ranch and are willing to kidnap her to get them. Romance blossoms between Jim and Marilee by the time matters are sorted out. Nothing fancy, but sure to be entertaining for traditional western fans. Budd Arthur
