An act of the Hawaiian Legislature provided for the collecting, recording, and preservation of ancient Hawaiian music and meles, or poetical compositions intended to be chanted. For this task, the Governor of Hawaii appointed the Hawaiian Legend and Folklore Commission, which supervised the massing of materials and publication of this report. It is hoped that chants obtained without music may be eventually studied, translated, and published.
