The author traces the one-child-per-family population control policy in China. His primary sources are Chinese documents, many translated here for the first time. The book consists of 89 pages of text, an appendix on infanticide, an appendix of reactions to two new articles on China's policy, and 71 pages of footnotes. The book's documentations, translations, and careful footnoting will make it of interest to specialists in the field, but it will be of less interest to the educated layperson who wants to understand and evaluate the policy. The author does not give a balanced weighing of arguments, nor does he flesh out the ethical dilemmas posed by China's controversial policy. The book will solidify the views of those who find the policy repelling, but will not necessarily inform those uncertain of their views.
