All head their own firms; all are articulate; most come across as hard-working professionals with few illusions; and each possesses his or her own design philosophy, methods of working, and "look." The range is diverse, including Ralph Lauren, designer and merchandiser of a lifestyle; Shamask, an architect of exquisite clarity and finesse; and James Galanos, a fabulous couturier in the old tradition. The leisurely pace of the interviews allows the quality of the person and the nature of his or her attitudes, commitments, and passions to emerge.
