The clever statement implicit in the title of this book, the catalog for an exhibition of contemporary German and Italian art at the Art Gallery of Ontario, bears closer examination. The essays go a long way to substantiate their authors' premise that much is happening in Europe today. The intermedia approach is especially relevant here; essays cover architecture, painting, film, design (both fashion and graphic), photography, and theater as separate sections, but bring together common relationships. Celant's introduction emphasizes the cultural contrasts and subtle alliances present in current European art. The result is a "new cultural condition" expressed by both internationally known artists and those who have emerging or avant-garde status within their country.
