Text: English, Italian
Cucchi is best known in this country as one of the transavanguardia , and this is the catalog for his first one-man show in an American museum. Cucchi's works are painterly, intuitive, and energetic. His technique is often childlike and awkward, but visually exciting. His sources appear to come from his own visions, the traditions of Italian painting, and his provincial experiences. The essay by Waldman is a little disappointing; her efforts to link Cucchi with both the beginnings of modernism and the Italian masters from Giotto to Caravaggio are not always convincing. The strongest part of the book are the illustrations, reproduced quite well, which convey the powerful, visionary, and disturbing qualities of Cucchi's art. Recommended for collections specializing in modern and contemporary art. Patricia Scott, Comparative Arts Dept., Ohio Univ. , Chillicothe
