Lane documents his visually stimulating study of ceramic form with the work of over 150 potters from around the world. Though he limits his presentation to bottles and bowls on the theory that these shapes provide the basis for the majority of vessels, his offering is generous. Chosen works exemplify not only a wide range of forms but also the variety of feeling and technique that marks contemporary ceramics. Lane explains many of these techniques throughout the text, further explaining how the artists translate their sources of inspiration into original work.
