PreSchool-Grade 2-- Bursting off the pages with energy and wild good cheer, these surrealistic monsters come in every imaginable hue. Kirk's zany illustrations don't bleed off the pages--they explode--and his jet-propelled verse is graphically integrated. In the first picture, a multiethnic crew of kids quietly play jacks. Then, "All the children jump and run, when the skateboard monsters come!/ Grab your hats and move your feet, skateboard monsters rule the street" starts the pumped-up adventure. Initial fear that the creatures will be scary evaporates as a newspaper appears with the headlines: "Duke & Corkscrew, Zack and Tilly: Don't you call those monsters silly!!!" Winding down, the book ends as the gang brush their fangs and go to bed (Zack reads a skateboarding book under the covers on the final page). Endpapers carry the theme onward with a rogues' gallery speckled with popcorn and bubblegum wrappers. The topic is hot, the treatment is irresistible, and the book will be fun to read whether in storytime or to one would-be skateboarder. --Carolyn Noah, Central Mass.
