Many are rarely seen by the public, since they are hidden behind high walls and closed gates or on the roofs of buildings. But noted author, journalist, and gardener Haas, along with photographer Sapieha, have obviously had access, visiting some 50 gardens, varying in size and splendor from tiny roof gardens to sprawling haciendas. Haas employs a smooth, seemingly effortless prose, and Sapieha's color photos are the work of a seasoned professional. However, plans of the gardens are not included, nor are lists of plants.
