In many of his prints, James Rosenquist aims to pack the same power found in his billboard-size Pop paintings. Dense with multiple associations, spiked with surreal humor, his graphics reveal a virtuoso colorist and witty social satirist. In works like A Pale Angel's Halo , Welcome to the Water Planet , Time Stream and Waterspout , we also see a relentlessly inquisitive investigator of space-time and of human cognitive processes. This snazzy album complements a traveling exhibit. In her thorough essay , Glenn, the director of the University Art Museum of California State University, follows Rosenquist's trajectory from Pop doodles of spaghetti to haunting images exploring the "state of our planet." Rosenquist has endured and flourished beyond his role as Pop visionary. Though best known for his paintings, his graphic work reveals a wealth of attention to technical detail; and the prints tell much about his approach to his subject matter. In its most important achievement, this exhibition catalog doubles as a catalog raisonne for these prints, bringing together 150 prints that span Rosenquist's career, including the culmination of his inspiration, "Time Dust," from 1992, believed to be the largest print ever executed.
