YA--A wonderful combination of art and history. This book celebrates the gift of Hauberg's collection of Native art of the Northwest region to the Seattle Art Museum. Beautiful full-color plates and accompanying writings by Native authors provide insight into the function of the objects as well as the traditions of the Kwakwaka'wakw, Makah, Tlingit, Nuuchah-nulth, and Haida cultures. Maps of the regions and a language chart that gives information about newly discovered Native language spellings are included. Most valuable of all are the documentary photographs that show the artifacts in their original context. The last sections offers a discussion of the specific design elements found on the objects and the meaning behind even the simplest curved lines. An excellent resource, and an unusual treat.
