While his owners are away, Frankie enlists the aid of several animal friends to get an architect to design a unique house for him in the Bauhaus style

Grade 2-4?Frankie, a shaggy golden mutt, is left alone when his owners go on vacation. They have just had a world-famous architect design their house. The dog, aided in using a computer by his mouse friend, sends a fax to the architect, commissioning her to design his house as well. Sketches, plans, and faxes fly until Frankie gets his Bauhaus-style home and a write-up in Architecture and Garden magazine. The trappings of this story are fairly high tech and sophisticated. Just as the authors have fun with puns and name-dropping, so does the artist. Arnold's illustrations are crisp, bright, and clean, as befits architectural renderings that range from rough sketches to floor plans, blueprints, and aerial views. The artist is inventive and creative with page layout and details. Frankie's basement storage area is shaped like a bone, and a ramp looks like a panting tongue. Only the architecturally minded will catch all the references, such as the final picture of Frankie crouched over a drawing table wearing a black cape and hat. Nevertheless, creative parents or teachers could use the book as a starting point to get kids thinking about designing their own perfect houses.?Judith Gloyer, Milwaukee Public Library

Frankie the dog's owners go on vacation, leaving the dog and their newly built Bauhaus. But Frankie has his own ideas for an appropriate dog's dream house, and this reflects his visions. Good reading and comprehension skills required, making this recommendable to ages 3-5. -- Midwest Book Review
