Published to accompany an exhibit from New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art that will travel around the country over the next two years, this catalog is a fresh and attractive sampling of 20th-century American still-life painting and photography. These are not just works that fit the traditional definition of still life, however. The authors use an expanded sense of the term to include everything from images of a corpse on a morgue table to an empty blanket spread on the grass. Some of the century's most famous artists are represented, but most of the 66 works are by less-well-known painters. The introductory essay and descriptive notes on each painting highlight the relationship between still life and both abstraction and figure drawing in our century. This volume is suitable for a wide audience, from browsers to specialists, and should be of interest to students. For most art collections.?Kathryn Wekselman, Univ. of Cincinnati Lib.
