George Rodrigue (March 13, 1944 - December 14, 2013) was an American artist who was born in New Iberia, Louisiana, and lived along the banks of the winding Bayou Teche until his death. In the late 1960s Rodrigue began painting Louisiana landscapes, followed soon after by outdoor family gatherings and southwest Louisiana 19th century and early 20th century genre scenes. His paintings often include moss-clad oak trees, common to an area of French Louisiana known as Acadiana. In the mid-1990s Rodrigue's Blue Dog paintings, based on a Cajun legend called loup-garou, catapulted him to worldwide fame. "The Cajuns of George Rodrigue" was the first book published of his works when he was only 32 years old. The history and the culture of the Cajun is unparalleled in America. Exiled from France, banished in the 18th century from Canadian Acadia; families split apart by the British governors, set adrift into North America to find their own way ultimately to the unfamiliar bayous and alligators and Spanish moss-laden live oak trees of South Louisiana. Until the 1970s these people had been immortalized only Longfellow, who never saw Louisiana, in his poem, Evangeline. But then the life and culture of the Cajuns, after so many years, came into the enormously gifted hands of one of their own - Rodrigue. Formally educated in Los Angeles and New York, Rodrigue returned to Louisiana determined to paint his own people. His works now hang in permanent collections at the Arvest Gallery in Boston, The Brockton Museum in Brockton, Massachusetts, the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse, New York, and the Fine Arts Museum of the South in Mobile, Alabama. He has also had numerous exhibits in museums around the globe.
