Love You More: The Divine Surprise of Adopting My Daughter grew from a series of columns I wrote about adopting my daughter years ago for Sun-Times Media newspapers. The series was called "The Red Thread: On Adoption" and was mainly comprised of personal stories about my experience adopting from Guatemala, but also highlighted topics around foster care in the U.S., theories of attachment, and other issues of interest to families. 
Over the few years when I dedicated my column to writing about adoption, I received email from people all over the U.S. Someone would read my column, clip or email it to a friend elsewhere in the country whose life was touched by adoption, and as time went by, I felt enveloped by a wonderful community of adoptive parents. I've learned so much - what it can feel like to adopt a child with special needs such as brain damage or HIV, hard stories of unethical adoption or disrupted adoptions, and much more. All of what I learned informed me as I wrote Love You More.Although I hoped, in writing this memoir, to encourage, educate, and engage families whose lives have been touched by adoption, that the book is a gift to my daughter was ever on my mind. Writing it felt like a weighty responsibility and an honor.
