ea. vol: photogs. glossary. index. 46p. (Discovering Nature Series). Bookwright Pr, dist. by Watts. 1986. PLB $10.40. Grade 4-6 Four books that provide brief but accurate overviews of their subjects. Each includes information on special anatomical features, general physical characteristics, natural habitats, diet, hunting and feeding techniques, life cycles, reproductive processes, defense mechanisms, and natural enemies. Sharp color photographs appear on almost every page and generally match the texts (species described in the text are usually, but not always, portrayed in the accompanying photos). The texts are well organized and clearly written, but some important data has been omitted. Many of the terms appearing in boldface are not immediately definedreaders must turn to the glossary; only common names of species, not scientific ones, are given; and some explanations of scientific processes are sketchyfor example, the sections on protective coloration fail to explain why brightly colored, poisonous species are generally safe from predators. The most useful title of the four will be Discovering Birds of Prey , as most books published recently in this area have been on eagles, not predatory birds in general. Although the other three books could serve as useful supplements, chiefly because of the excellent color photographs, they will not replace standard (and more detailed) works on these subjectsMitchell's Butterflies & Moths (Golden, 1964); Hutchins' A Look at Ants (Dodd, 1978; o.p.); Overbeck's Ants and Dallinger's Frogs and Toads (both Lerner, 1982).
