Gr. 3-6. The slim, colorful volumes in the Restless Earth series spotlight aspects of our changing planet. Coasts and Islands explains the formation of islands and the interaction of land and water in coastal areas, including topics such as waves and tides, drifting sand, and coral reefs and atolls. The beach constructions commonly known to Americans as jetties are referred to as groynes, a term that may reflect the book's British origins. Mountains discusses topics such as how mountains are formed, what forces wear them down, how they affect climate, and what types of plants and animals they support. Each subject is presented briefly on a double-page spread. Taking up slightly more space than the text, the many full-color illustrations include excellent photos, paintings, and diagrams. The photographs show landforms in locations around the world. Each book includes a two-page glossary. Useful in larger collections. Carolyn Phelan
