There is a wealth of information on the shoemaking, Illustrated with descriptions, a fantastic collection, and a wonderful history. There is information on places to visit. This book and a lot of others in my inventory are from private collectors and kept as new.## ## Full colour cover, satin finish. Full information where further reading and visiting is available. ## ## SHOEMAKING: Shoemaking is a subject about which most people are blissfully ignorant, although, with a little encouragement, they will complain about the shoes they wear. Before the 1920s, however, everyone knew the local cobbler, a worthy representative of the 'gentle craft', who repaired shoes and made them look new for a few pence. This Album tells the story of shoemaking from the days of the isolated shoemaker, who made a shoe right through, to the groups of men who worked with apprentices in the larger towns and served the customer directly. It shows the growth of mass production in the seventeenth century, with a recognisable factory system and warehouses in the cities. In 1725, Defoe dressed his typical Englishman in shoes from Northampton, a town that became synonymous with shoemaking. Finally, the book shows the late development of mechanisation in the 1850s and the rigidity it imposed. Today, there is a hint of a return to the more civilised way of working of former times.## ## Shire Books by Bloomsbury Publishing, a book publishing company based in London, England, and formerly by Shire Publications Ltd. and Osprey Publishing. Shire offers low-priced, concise non-fiction paperbacks on a wide range of subjects. Shire books cover antiques and collectables, motoring and rural history, archaeology and Egyptology, architecture, industrial history and many other topics.## ## They were founded in 1962 by John Rotheroe, the company based in Princes Risborough, Buckinghamshire. The first book published by Shire Publications was Discovering East Suffolk, a 24-page guide to the county through a series of five motoring routes and a gazetteer of the main towns and villages. They were given away to visitors via coach operators, local churches and tourist information points. The book was successful, and Shire publishers decided to sell the second edition because free copies were being sold, setting the template for the future of Shire. Over the following years, Shire expanded its Discovering series and launched several new series, including Lifelines, Shire Albums, Shire Archaeology and Shire Egyptology. ## ## In 2008, Shire began a revamp of its list.
