From the Author

Professor Mohammed Ghanbari, an IEE Fellow and Chartered Engineer, is at the University of Essex, UK. He is best known for pioneering work on two-layer video coding for ATM networks (SNR scalability in MPEG-2 video codecs). Prior to his academic career Professor Ghanbari worked for ten years in broadcasting. He has published more than 200 papers, registered for three international patents on video networking and was the co-recipient of the A.H. Reeves Prize for best paper on digital coding published in the 1995 IEE Proceedings. He is a co-author of Principles of Performance Engineering (IEE, 1997) and is an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Multimedia.
