Synopsis
This essay by the French philosopher and psychologist Lucien Sève proposes a marxist approach to psychology.
Sève sees the central theoretical problem of psychology as that of the formation and development of human personalities. And he finds the premise for its solution in Marx's fundamental analysis of the process of social production and formation of production relations - the theory of historical materialism. Human personality in all its variability can, he maintains, be scientifically analysed and explained only when it is understood that human individuals are themselves the product of social relationships within which alone their individualities develop.
From this point of view Sève criticises current psychological theories, discussing the bearings of the psychological insights obtained on the conception of "From each according to his ability, to each according to his need" in a communist society.
