Art Nouveau during the Reign of the Last Tsars accompanies the Hermitage Museum's exhibition in Amsterdam. The goal of the book is to introduce the reader to the vast collection of Art Nouveau pieces held by the Hermitage, St Petersburg. The tsars received many objets d'art as diplomatic gifts especially from the French who were seeking Russia's support in the Franco-Prussian war of 1870. Galle, the Daum brothers, Faberge and Lalique are just a few of the artists acquired by the tsars and by wealthy private citizens. Art Nouveau had a major impact on Russian artists who drew on elements of the practice yet rejected others to create the Russian Stil Modern. Whilst celebrating the royal patronage of Western artists, the aim of this publication is also to reveal how medieval Russian architecture, fine art and folk art were all harnessed to create this unique Russian style."

Tamara Rappe is head of Western European Applied Arts at the Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg; Elena Anisimova is the Curator of Glass at the Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg; Natalya Guseva is the Curator for Furniture in the Russian department of the Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg; Marina Lopato is the Curator of Jewellery in the Western European department of the Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg; Frans Leidelmeijer is a specialist in twentieth-century applied art.
