Synopsis

This is the first comprehensive Dictionary of Irish Writers ever to be published in paperback, and it will fill a long-felt need both for the serious student who requires a reference book, and for the general reader who wants a guide to lead him beyond the obvious names to the great wealth of lesser figures who deserve his attention, but often escape it because he has no easy way of knowing what they wrote, or what value it might have for him.
The Dictionary provides biographical sketches and lists the principal works of more than five hundred Irish writers; poets, novelists, dramatists and short story writers who used or are using English as their medium, but whose minds and work have been shaped by Ireland. It ranges in time from the late 13th century when the shadowy 'Michael of Kildare' wrote the first known Anglo-Irish poetry, to the present and the brilliant younger generation of writers which includes Edna O'Brien, Brendan Kennedy, William Trevor, John B. Keane and Brian Friel - to choose a handful of names at random. It includes, of course, the greatest Irish writers, who belong rather to international literature; Swift, Beckett, Yeats, Shaw, Synge, Joyce, Wilde and O'Casey. But its chief value is the information it offers about the minor yet significant writers of the immediate and remoter past.
It is compiled by Brian Cleeve who is best known in Ireland as a television reporter and elsewhere as a writer of short stories and distinguished thrillers. He is also a Doctor of Philosophy of the National University of Ire- land.
