William K. Tabb is Professor of economics and Professor of political science at Queens college and Professor of political science at the Graduate Center of the City of New York. He is the author of The Postwar Japanese System: Cultural Economy and Economic Transformation (1995) and Restructuring Political Economy: The Great Divide in Economic Thought (1999).
Aiming to introduce the religious left to the secular left, the editors of Monthly Review , an independent socialist magazine, solicited the essays collected here regarding the influence of liberation theology on the more universal struggle for economic and social justice. The essays, almost half of which are reprinted from other publications, stress that the "new" theological interpretations are seeking to revitalize Christianity by re-reading the Bible from the perspective of the poor and oppressed. The book has much to yield if the reader is willing to wade through prose not designed for the average layperson. Recommended, but only for academic and large public library collections.
