About the Author

Teresa Amott is Associate Professor of Economics at Bucknell University, an Editorial Associate of Dollars & Sense, and co-author with Julie Matthaei of Race, Gender, and Work: A Multicultural History of Women in the United States (1991).

From Library Journal

Emphasizing the effect of the current economic downturn, Amott (economics, Bucknell Univ.) presents a radical view of women's economic history. She believes that over the last 20 years women have assumed a greater economic burden as they have entered the workplace in increasing numbers, with little compensating reduction in caregiving tasks. In assessing her arguments, readers must keep in mind the author's viewpoint. For example, she describes the North Vietnamese as participating in a "national liberation movement" and Reagan's firing of the air-traffic controllers as union-busting, with no mention of antistrike laws. The reasoning is sometimes fuzzy, and the footnotes do not support the arguments. Recommended only for libraries seeking complete collections.
