Book by Chartres, John, Henshaw, Bert, Dewar, Michael

Chartres is a British newspaper reporter who covered the early days of the more recent "Troubles" for the London Times, and Henshaw and Dewar are British soldiers stationed on and off in Northern Ireland during the British Army presence, which started in 1969 and continues today. Here the three present more than 300 photographs documenting the period, most of which were taken by Daily Mirror and Northern Ireland Tourist Board photographers as well as by Henshaw. Pictures reflect a cross-section of life in the embattled region: an explosion in a gift shop (with boxes flying into the street), soldiers playing with children, priests administering last rites to a bombing victim, vacationers enjoying the scenery, boys throwing rocks at a British vehicle, propaganda posters for both sides and Henshaw's shots of army training exercises and equipment. The compilers' goal is a "fair and balanced" account of the battle between Catholics and Protestants, and because they show the horrors perpetuated by both the Ulster Defence Association and the Provisional IRA, they seem to succeed.
