Synopsis
Fascinating history of the Class 55 Deltic diesel electric locomotives that were considered the fastest motive power on British Rail. Developed from an airplane engine concept, the design was followed through to an 18 cylinder marine version and finally developed for use in a high-powered, lightweight locomotive fitted with two of the engines. The outstanding performance of the prototype led to use in a fleet of 22 others which replaced the LNER Pacific steam engine. The book also covers the 10 "Baby Deltics," ten general purpose locomotives built with a single nine-cylinder engine. Illustrated throughout with photographs (black and white as well as color), drawings and schematic diagrams. With roster. 56 pages.
