Having emerged in 1945 from the shackles of Nazi ideology, German women played a major and hitherto neglected part in postwar economic and social reconstruction. These changes in the socioeconomic positions of women preceded by some twenty years even more significant shifts in values and gender relations in the Federal Republic.
