9780855751616: Uluru: An Aboriginal history of Ayers Rock

Synopsis

In 1976, Layton was engaged to record local traditions and engage in research to help document the Aboriginal claims to the land. Much of the material was collected in the field from 1977 to 1979, and part is taken from evidence at the hearing for the land claim in April and May 1979. He looks at pre-contact traditions, conflict and change, and land rights. The volume is 10 3/4 deep. Distributed in the US by ISBS. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. ix+139pp., Pictorial full colour photographic dustjacket, green cloth boards with gilt text to spine, light green endpapers, col. plts. & text ills., diags., tables, appends., index. Most of us think of it as Ayers Rock, largest monolith in the world. However, the Yakunjatjara and Pitjantjatjara people see it as Uluru- major centre of the dreaming tracks which criss- cross central Australia. They have lived like refugees in their own country for the past hundred years. Layton traces the history of their dispossession and their relations with bureaucracies, cattle stations, missions, and police. Size: Oblong Quarto. Book. Seller Inventory # 000825
