About the book >.>.> The architectural quality of a building is not, however, to be explained solely in terms of its plan. An architect is more than a planner and decorator. Architecture is concerned with the organisation and lighting of volumes, the articulation of surfaces and, not least, with the ways in which the building is revealed to the observer. It requires a considerable effort, even for those who are accustomed to reading drawings, to comprehend the character and presence of a complex work of architecture which no longer exists and this is particularly true of late Victorian and Edwardian theatres where the creation of atmosphere was all-important. The Metropolitan provided to the very end a wealth of visual experiences which no drawing or still photograph can effectively convey. However one approached it, the first view of its glowing, nicotine-browned auditorium was immensely exciting. Its generously curving lines and sensuously detailed plasterwork gave no hint of the fact that it was (at least in part) new flesh upon old. Seller Inventory # Batch-FM579-VG-12295
