`Sailing Away from Night' is John Digby's second book of poems, and is illustrated with his own collages. His first London exhibition was held in January 1978.
Nathaniel Tarn called his first book, `The Structure of Bifocal Distance' (Anvil, 1974) `a triumph of vision', and Asa Benveniste wrote of it in `Ambit': `Perhaps the most exciting book of poems to have appeared here for a very long time. John Digby's self-imposed neglect... is the result of his militant adherence to the manifesto of surrealism... One is constantly shocked throughout this book by the beauty of some of his lines, by the anarchic and ambiguous after-images which his nervous but uncompromising explorations into language shape... Digby has picked his way like a master through the arcane elements of his subjective cupboard.'
